Item tooltips for your website
With one line of code, links to GuildLoot item pages show an item card on hover: name in quality colour, stats, source and game version. It works on guild sites, blogs and fan sites for Classic Era, TBC and WoW Forever. Free, no cookies and no tracking.
Try it
Hover over the links, or tap them on your phone. A second tap opens the item page.
- Classic Era: Choker of the Fire Lord
- TBC: Nathrezim Mindblade
- WoW Forever: Gold Bar
WoW Forever: stats from the Forever item database as of September 2026, without guarantee. For Forever the tooltip shows no sources or drops.
How to add it
1. Add this line to your page once, ideally before </body>:
<script src="https://guildloot.de/tooltip.js" referrerpolicy="no-referrer" defer></script>2. Link to the item page on GuildLoot as usual. You find the address in your browser when you open an item on GuildLoot:
<a href="https://guildloot.de/en/item/era/18814-choker-of-the-fire-lord/">Choker of the Fire Lord</a>You can also use just the item ID. The script then fills in the address; without JavaScript the link stays empty, so the form above is better:
<a data-guildloot-item="18814" data-version="era">Choker of the Fire Lord</a>Options
| Attribute | Where | Effect |
|---|---|---|
data-lang="de" | on the script or on a link | Language German (or "en"). Without it: English item address (/en/…) → English, otherwise the language of your page (<html lang>); German for German pages, English for all others. |
data-icons="on" | on the script | Show item icons. They come from wow.zamimg.com (Wowhead) and are artwork by Blizzard Entertainment; whether you may use them on your site is your own responsibility. Without it, the tooltip shows a plain frame in the quality colour and loads nothing from wow.zamimg.com. |
data-version="tbc" | on a link with data-guildloot-item | Game version: era (default), tbc or forever. |
data-guildloot-off | on a link | No tooltip for this link. |
Guides
Plain HTML page
Add the script line before </body> on every page with item links (or once in your shared template). That is all.
WordPress
The easiest way is a plugin for custom header or footer scripts (for example WPCode): paste the script line into the footer and save. Then add item links in the editor as usual. On WordPress.com, custom scripts are only possible on plans with plugins.
Discord and Discord-related sites
Discord itself does not run scripts. Messages, bots and webhooks therefore show no tooltips, but the link works as usual. Tooltips only work on websites, for example on your guild site that also shows your Discord widget or raid planning. Site builders that only allow embedded blocks (iframes) show tooltips only inside that block.
For sites with a Content Security Policy
The script uses no eval, no inline styles and no HTML from strings, and it also works with Trusted Types. You only need to allow:
script-src https://guildloot.de;
connect-src https://guildloot.de;Only with data-icons="on", also: img-src https://wow.zamimg.com;
Privacy for site owners
The script sets no cookies, stores nothing in the browser and does not count visitors. On hover, the browser loads small data files from guildloot.de; the pages are served by GitHub Pages, which, like any host, logs technical connection data (for example the IP address). For these requests the browser technically sends the domain of your site (Origin header), but not the address of the individual page. Whether a referrer is sent when tooltip.js itself is loaded depends on your site; with referrerpolicy="no-referrer" as in the code above, none is sent. Item icons only appear with data-icons="on"; the browser then loads them from wow.zamimg.com. Details are in our privacy policy.
A sentence for your own privacy policy could read:
This website embeds the item tooltip script from GuildLoot (guildloot.de) to show World of Warcraft items when you hover over a link. Your browser loads files from guildloot.de (hosted on GitHub Pages, GitHub Inc., USA); the provider technically receives your IP address and the domain of this website. GuildLoot sets no cookies and collects no data itself. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a clear presentation of item links (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
With data-icons="on", add: item icons are loaded from wow.zamimg.com (Wowhead, ZAM Network LLC, USA); this provider also receives your IP address.
Frequently asked questions
Does it cost anything?
No. The script is free, with no sign-up and no paid tier.
Is there tracking?
No. The script sets no cookies, stores nothing in the browser and sends no counts to GuildLoot. It only loads the item data when someone hovers over a link; the browser technically sends the domain of your site with it (Origin header), not the page address.
Do I have to use rel="nofollow"?
That is up to you. The script sets no rel attribute and leaves links with an address unchanged. Only links with data-guildloot-item and no href get the item page address as href.
Is this an official Blizzard service?
No. GuildLoot is a free fan project and is not affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment.
Does it interfere with Wowhead tooltips on the same page?
No. The script only reacts to links to guildloot.de and to elements with data-guildloot-item.
Does it work in Discord?
No. Discord does not run scripts. Tooltips only work on websites; in Discord the link stays a normal link.
Where do the stats come from?
From the GuildLoot item database: stats from CMaNGOS (GPL-3.0), texts from the game data (Blizzard Entertainment). For WoW Forever, the Forever item database as of September 2026 applies, without guarantee.
Will the script stay stable?
Yes. tooltip.js stays backwards compatible at the same address; the version is in window.GuildLootTooltip.version.
